New Products for 2009

The large arbor Abel Super 3N is the ultimate reel for the small- to medium-sized spring creek and technical meadow stream trout angler.  Designed and precision engineered for the 3- and 4- weight fly lines, it hangs effortlessly from a classic bamboo or state-of-the-art graphite rod. 

The reel is also available as a standard arbor model with the FlexABELity to interchange frames/spools with the large arbor version. 

At 4.2 ounces, the Super 3N is our lightest and narrowest reel in the Super Series.  Introductory price is $ 425.00

Years of testing and engineering have produced the Super Series Quick Change (QC) reel. Simply back off the drag knob, push in and rotate the center cap for quickest spool release in the industry.

The first of three sizes of the QC - for 7/8 lines - will be out this spring, while the 9/10 and 11/12's are due in October.

• Super Series QC models utilize 6061-T651 cold finished aerospace grade aluminum for the spool and frame.
• Hi-Grade C64299 Silicon Aluminum Bronze drive system.
• Buna sealed micro-bearings are ISO 9001:200 and AS9100 certified FAA TSO C149 aircraft bearings.
• Cork Drag System is made entirely in our factory. We use a superior high grade cork with a little neats-foot oil on it.
• Double Pawl System; Advantages over single pawl system include: increased reliability, back-up strength and unique sound.
• Quick change spool.
• Made in the USA.

One hundred of the individually colored and anodized reels will be produced. Reels will be accompanied by a signed and numbered 11x14-inch gicleè print of a rainbow trout by Prosek. The print number will correspond to the reel number.

The new reel size from Abel for 2009 was designed with a tall frame and narrow spool for maximum retrieval rate. At 4.2 ounces, the Super #3N or Narrow reel with a 1.50-inch hub has been precision machined for 3- and 4-weight flylines.

Funds derived from the Abel reel and accompanying Prosek prints will be used by the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers to carry out a large-scale stream conservation project on the famed Beaverkill in New York and some of its spawning tributaries: TGF Beaverkill Restoration.

Prosek, who has authored and/or illustrated Trout an Illustrated History, Trout of the World, Joe and Me, Fly-Fishing the 41st Parallel, Early Love and Brook Trout and a children’s book, A Good Day’s Fishing, has been called the James Audubon of fish.

The collectors’ edition rainbow Super #3N reel to benefit the Theodore Gordon Flyfishers is priced at $750.

Abel has chosen two paintings to replicate on their reels from DeYoung’s series, “The Abstract Trout Faces.” One reel finish is based on DeYoung’s “Abstract Rainbow – Serendipity,” a representation of a rainbow trout with a small serendipity fly in its mouth. The other is based on “Abstract Brown – Copper John,” a painting of a butter-colored brown trout with a shiny copper john in its jaw. Both of the DeYoung custom finishes are limited to the year of 2009 and available on any size Abel reel.

DeYoung, 28, was raised on the shores of a small lake in western Michigan, where he and his two brothers spent nearly every waking hour chasing pan fish, largemouth bass and northern pike. The artist graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Both of the DeYoung “Abstract Trout” finishes are priced at $200 above the normal cost of the Abel reel. Fly reel artwork representation of the rainbow and brown trout with flies are individually hand painted and anodized at the Abel precision machine shop.

An Abel Super 7 model reel inspired and illustrated by Florida Keys artist Tim Borski benefits Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited.

We will produce 50 signed and numbered illustrated reels with #1 going to Borski and #2 to the Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited conservation organization for their sale.

Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited is a 501(C)3 not-for-profit organization based in South Florida with a worldwide presence. The organization supports or collaborates on research projects throughout the Caribbean and Pacific with a goal to protect and enhance both species by gaining a better understanding of their biology and ecology. The Super 7 large arbor for 7- and 8- weight lines, provides anglers rapid line pick-up capabilities, ideal for redfish anglers.

The collectors edition reel by Tim Borski to benefit Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited is priced at $2,000.
