ARTIST DEREK DeYOUNG CREATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY ABEL REELS
CAMARILLO, Calif. – In 1988, the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series, the Washington Redskins the Super Bowl and the Edmonton Oilers hockey’s Stanley Cup. It was also when the first Abel fly reel was machined in the rural Ventura County town of Camarillo.
Twenty-five years and thousands of Abel Reels later, the firm celebrates its Silver Anniversary with a commemorative finish by Montana artist Derek DeYoung.
DeYoung was raised on the shores of a small lake in western Michigan where he and his two brothers spent nearly every waking hour chasing pan fish, largemouth bass and northern pike. His career as an artist began around that same time as he began to sketch images of the fish he caught.
The artist graduated with a BFA in Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Mich.
DeYoung’s artistic talents resulted in an old school-looking black and gray charcoal style trout flank [side] painting that Abel has painstakingly reproduced for its 25th Anniversary. Available on every model and size Abel reel, each hand painted design takes their artists approximately eight hours to create.
“But in the end, we think it’s worth it as a piece of machining and anodizing heirloom art that exemplifies our 25 years of providing anglers both the finest looking and functioning products in the flyfishing industry,” said Don R. Swanson, president of the California tackle manufacturer.
Abel quarter-century anniversary heirloom finished reels are available for $250 over the cost of the same model reel in basic black. Reels may be ordered at participating authorized Abel dealers or www.abelreels.com
