ABEL JOINS WITH ‘RIVERS OF RECOVERY’ IN VETERANS’ REHABILITATION PROGRAM
CAMARILLO, Calif. – Rivers of Recovery, a Minnesota-based non-profit organization offering outdoor recreation rehabilitation programs to combat veterans, and California fishing tackle manufacturer Abel Automatics, Inc., are teaming to produce a fly reel that will benefit the nationwide non-profit group.
Abel will engrave the Rivers of Recovery color logo on a limited number of Super 5N reels and donate $100 from each one sold.
“Each Rivers of Recovery trip hosts eight active duty or combat veterans on a four-day, science-based, experiential rehabilitation program that focuses on confidence-building, outdoor activities, talk therapy in a relaxed, positive environment and proven techniques on the self-management of symptoms, stressors and responses. Through fly-fishing, instruction increases self-confidence, skill-improvement builds empowerment, and achievement facilitates enthusiasm and resiliency.
“During the fishing day, participants apply newfound skills on the river, demonstrate ability and build confidence. The social interaction among participants reinforces a sense of success, empowerment and a reconnection to self,” said Jon Cummings, Special Operations Chief (SEAL) and Rivers of Recovery Board of Directors member.
According to Rivers of Recovery, “It is estimated that 400,000 to 600,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from psychological injuries. Another 320,000 returnees suffer from a probable Traumatic Brain Injury. Research has shown that three-fourths of these individuals receive minimal to no care. Data further demonstrates without treatment intervention these veterans are significantly more likely to suffer from substance abuse, get divorced, be unemployed, be homeless and commit suicide. Conversely, if healthy, our country’s veterans represent an unparalleled source of leadership, knowledge, talent and skills that can help build our country’s future.
The Abel Super 5N (narrow) Large Arbor reel is designed for 5- and 6-weight flylines. It holds a 5 line with 125-yards of 20-pounds backing; a 6 line with 100-yards of 20-pounds backing. At 5.2 ounces, the Super 5N balances with all 8- to 9-foot rods from classic bamboo to space age graphite.
Precision machined in the USA, the Abel reel frame, spool, drag knob and foot are made of 6061-T651 cold finished aerospace grade aluminum. It features Teflon® sealed bearings and a cork drag system.
The reels are priced at $700 and are available through Abel’s website, www.abelreels.com
, authorized Abel dealers and Rivers of Recovery.
